We recently received an inquiry from a customer:
"SOLAHANPU offers canvas (fabric) series wallets. Even though they are waxed, won't a fabric wallet pill or get fuzzy from friction, or absorb sweat and moisture? I'm curious about their durability."
Many people nowadays seek thin wallets, but with a fabric wallet, it's natural to worry about daily wear and tear and whether you'll regret the choice. This time, we'd like to answer your questions about the "durability" and "changes" in canvas wallets.
First and foremost, the SOLAHANPU canvas series uses "waxed canvas," which is natural cotton canvas thoroughly impregnated with wax components. This creates characteristics that differ from ordinary fabric.
・Regarding friction and pilling
If a wallet were made from ordinary fabric, it would quickly pill and become difficult to use if rubbed in a pocket or bag.
However, SOLAHANPU's canvas, impregnated with wax, has a layer of wax on its surface that helps fibers stay together, significantly suppressing pilling.
On the contrary, daily friction causes the wax components to work, creating a sheen on the surface and giving it a pleasant, broken-in feel. While it's fabric, a major characteristic is that it gradually approaches a texture somewhat like "leather."
・Regarding moisture and sweat absorption, and durability
Because it contains wax, it is not completely waterproof, but it has the property of repelling light droplets or making them less likely to soak in.
However, if you ask "will it absolutely not absorb sweat or moisture" when used in a pants pocket in midsummer, it's impossible to prevent that. It's realistic to assume that some degree of absorption will occur.
However, we don't consider this "absorption" to be entirely a bad thing.
In fact, a slight amount of moisture creates a moderate rubbing effect, which has the advantage of making the canvas's unique "sheen" more likely to appear the more it's used. It's slightly different from the aging (patina) of leather products, but you can enjoy a very unique and attractive change specific to waxed canvas: "fabric that develops a sheen with use."
