Design and machining in 0.1mm increments. The boundary between extreme thinness and strength revealed through developing ultra-thin wallets.

When designing a "thin wallet," the greatest challenge alongside structure is material thickness. While leather 1.0mm to 1.5mm thick is commonly used in standard wallets, simply stacking and stitching this material results in a thickness of 1cm to 2cm or more.

One standard we arrived at for producing compact wallets like the Tenuis 3rd and 4th generations and the Tynd is to split goat leather down to 0.5mm. Thicker than this loses softness, while thinner compromises strength, hence 0.5mm as the benchmark. The outer cowhide leather has different characteristics from goatskin and serves a different purpose, so the standard here is 0.8mm. This also achieves softness and thinness while maintaining strength and texture. It may not sound like much, but the properties change significantly every 0.1mm.

The Tenuis Full Cowhide version pursues a different direction from the goatskin version, so the standards change: 0.8mm for the inner layer and 1.4mm for the outer layer. This model does not utilize the elasticity of goatskin for mechanisms like inserting cards. Instead, it features a structured card pocket designed with firm cowhide.

Producing these requires meticulous work: precisely aligning and bonding the edges (known as "koba" or "heri") without the slightest misalignment. There are even sections where already-sewn components must be deliberately bent out of the way to sew around them. This is no simple task. It's a process so labor-intensive and time-consuming that even skilled artisans find it challenging unless they are thoroughly accustomed to it – a reason factories often avoid it.

Simply sewing together thin materials requires little skill. However, achieving both functionality as designed and rugged durability that withstands daily heavy use while preserving the unique characteristics and texture of Italian leather or goatskin—that's the challenge. These wallets embody the culmination of over a decade of trial and error spent defining that delicate balance.
