From Card Cases to Wrist-Worn Devices of the Future? SOLAHANPU’s Vision for “The Smart Wallet of the Future”

As someone who works with mini wallets, compact wallets, and other types of wallets on a daily basis, I sometimes find myself wondering, “What will the wallet of the future look like?”

Cashless payments are becoming increasingly widespread around the world, but the pace of adoption varies greatly by country and region. For example, credit card payments remain deeply entrenched in the United States and Canada. Within Europe, the Nordic countries have the highest adoption rates for cashless payments, while in Germany and its neighboring countries, a significant amount of cash is still in circulation. In China, Taiwan, Singapore, and South Korea, digital payments are highly advanced, but in parts of Southeast Asia, cash is still widely used. And while Japan has also been moving toward cashless payments in recent years, the reality is that there are still many stores and machines that accept only cash.

As you can see, there are significant regional differences in payment environments around the world. Amid these diverse changes, I’d like to share some of my ideas about wallets tailored to future scenarios—what SOLAHANPU envisions as the “wallet of the future.”

(*Please note that this is purely speculative; it includes ideas unrelated to future global trends, as well as concepts we may or may not actually develop. Some of these may already exist in certain countries.)

1. A Wallet Designed Exclusively for “Cards”

This type has been gaining popularity in places like the U.S. for several years now. While some are made of leather or fabric like traditional wallets, many are crafted from materials similar to metal or plastic card cases, where cards slide out in a staircase-like fashion when you flip a lever. They have a certain sleekness, similar to a money clip that holds bills. If we were to create such a “card-only wallet,” we’d face a tough decision right from the material selection stage: should we design it using warm, natural materials like leather or canvas, or take a futuristic approach with entirely new materials like metal or plastic cases? It would certainly be an interesting challenge.

2. Going Against the Grain? A “Coins-Only” Wallet

This is an idea that seems well-suited for environments like Japan, where a unique cash culture is highly likely to persist. These already exist—I’ve noticed quite a few mini wallets designed like dedicated coin holders. People are moving away from carrying large, long wallets, relying primarily on smartphone payments, and instead carrying only the coins that don’t fit elsewhere, neatly arranged in a single row for a compact carry.

3. Almost like something out of science fiction: The “wrist-worn” wallet

This is a concept based entirely on the premise of digital payments. It’s a wearable wallet that is either a contactless payment device in itself or one that incorporates a contactless payment chip. It sounds almost like something out of a sci-fi movie, but given the pace of modern technological advancements, that era is fast approaching. If a wrist-worn type is possible, then ring-style wallets should likely become a reality as well. Well, once we get to that point, it’s no longer really a wallet—it’s more like a digital device.

While I’ve let my imagination run wild with various future designs, in reality, the wallet as a tool will continue to evolve in practical ways to suit actual payment environments and lifestyles.

From traditional, bulky long wallets to minimalist and compact wallets that push the limits of thinness—measuring just a few millimeters thick. As times change, the size we expect from our pockets is definitely evolving.

For minimalists, of course, but also for everyone who wants to lighten their load and travel light, SOLAHANPU plans to continue actively developing new types of mini wallets—beyond the ideas mentioned here—that adapt to real-world environments.
