Why Are Shoulder Tote Bags "Inefficient"? Why I'm Obsessed with Crossbody Bags and Pockets

Hello, I'm designer Sola. You often see shoulder-strap tote bags around town. At first glance, they look stylish, but when you prioritize mobility, a few weaknesses become apparent.

(This content is not intended to absolutely criticize any specific item; the point is that items have their strengths and weaknesses depending on the situation.)

The risk of having one hand occupied

Tote bags require constant support on one shoulder or by hand, restricting movement while walking. For those with sloping shoulders, it's also a constant battle against slipping off. While easy to access, they carry the risk of being dropped or snatched. They can slide down in front of you when crouching, get in the way when using both hands for tasks, and so on.

Stable center of gravity enables mobility

I prefer body bags and crossbody bags because they leave both hands completely free. With the bag's center of gravity close to the body, it doesn't sway or hinder movement. Only when what you wear becomes integrated with your body can it truly deliver "capabilities beyond mere objects." This design philosophy also informs my approach to creating bags and wallets.
