Where do you usually put your wallet when you go out? I think people generally fall into two camps: those who put it in their front pockets and those who put it in their back pockets. Personally, I’ve always been in the “front-pocket-only” camp.

At first glance, this choice might seem like just a matter of personal preference, but when you compare the two in terms of security and ease of management, there’s actually a surprisingly big difference.
First, the biggest weaknesses of back pockets are that they’re “easy to lose” and “unprotected.” I’m sure some of you have had the experience of your wallet slipping right out through the gap in your pocket when sitting on a chair or in a car seat. Also, since back pockets are completely out of your line of sight, they carry a high risk of pickpocketing, especially in crowded places or certain environments.
In Japan, carrying your wallet in a back pocket might not be a problem, but the situation changes completely once you step outside the country. Overseas, almost no one carries their wallet in a back pocket. In some countries, this makes you a prime target for pickpockets, and locals instinctively understand that “putting valuables in a back pocket is dangerous.”
On the other hand, front pockets are generally within your line of sight and within easy reach, so they have the advantage of making it harder to lose or drop your wallet. As a result, from an overall management perspective, front pockets offer more safety benefits.
However, with traditional, thick, and bulky wallets, placing them in a front pocket can be bothersome—they may dig into your groin or create an unflattering bulge in your silhouette.
That’s exactly why mini and compact wallets come into their own. Compared to traditional wallets, they’ve evolved in every aspect—including size and thickness—so they don’t get in the way at all when placed in a front pocket. Not only are they convenient and functional, but simply having a pocket that isn’t bulky and is surprisingly thin and small should make a significant difference in how you feel when walking.
