SOLAHANPU’s ultra-thin, compact wallets are primarily made from materials such as cotton canvas, cowhide, and goatskin.
Recently, there has been an increase in new materials—such as canvas blended with synthetic fibers, synthetic leather, and plant-based vegan leather—and I feel we are living in a very exciting era.
We’ve also experimented with various alternatives to see if we could substitute other materials, but it hasn’t been easy to replicate the unique characteristics of natural materials using synthetic fibers and the like.
- Cotton canvas : It has a texture unique to natural cotton and is more heat-resistant than synthetic fibers, allowing us to create a distinctive look through a paraffin (wax) finish.
- Cowhide : It has a charm unique to animal leather—natural wrinkles and patterns that cannot be replicated through chemical processes, as well as the scent of tannin tanning.
- Goatskin : This is an indispensable material for the interior of SOLA wallets. It possesses rubber-like elasticity and tensile strength; even when thin, it remains incredibly resilient—a characteristic that simply cannot be replicated by any other material.
While we’d like to experiment with other interesting materials in the future, for now we plan to continue using these materials to maintain the functionality and characteristics of our products.
However, environmental and resource conservation are also important considerations. Since we work with natural materials, we will be more mindful than ever of using every last bit of the material with minimal waste through thoughtful design.
Please note that due to their construction, SOLA wallets make extensive use of goatskin on the inside. However, for those who wish to “avoid animal-derived materials even on the exterior,” we also offer the “Tenuis (Zipper Type) Canvas Edition,” which features a cotton canvas exterior. We hope you’ll choose the option that best suits your preferences and values.
