[Preparing to Make a Minimalist Wallet] The Depth and Attention to Detail in Craftsmanship Unique to Canvas—Completely Different from Leather

For the first time in a while, I’m preparing and pre-treating some canvas. This involves pre-shrinking it by soaking it in water, applying a wax coating (paraffin treatment), cutting it to size, and then assembling the pieces.

Even when making the same compact wallet, canvas is completely different from leather, and there are various unique points that require special attention.

First, if the initial “shrink-proofing” isn’t done thoroughly in advance, the canvas is much more prone to deformation due to environmental factors than leather. Furthermore, the subsequent “waxing” is a very delicate process; if too little or too much paraffin is applied, it will significantly affect the finished texture and visual appeal.

Even during the “cutting” stage, unlike leather, there are distinctions between the warp and weft threads along the weave lines, so you must pay close attention to these details.

“Vibrant Color” That Only Natural Cotton Can Achieve

Although canvas is such a labor-intensive material, one characteristic that sets it apart from leather is its “vibrant color.”

Due to its nature as an animal-based material, leather tends to absorb dye differently depending on the cut and type of hide; while this can add depth, it also makes it difficult to achieve a uniform, targeted color.

In contrast, canvas has the characteristic of allowing dyed colors to appear clearly. Vivid hues and subtle nuances that are difficult to achieve with leather can be expressed with canvas.

Each material requires a different approach, and I find it truly fascinating as a craftsperson to thoroughly explore how to make the most of each material’s unique characteristics.

Please look forward to the unique texture and durability of our canvas products, born from our proprietary preparation methods and meticulous cutting.
