Among the products SOLA has created, there is one that stands out most vividly in my memory. It is the “canvas version” of the third-generation Tenuis—a slim, compact wallet—which, in 2019, raised approximately 44 million yen through crowdfunding, setting a new national record at the time. (In fact, at that time, the canvas version was the only option available.)
In fact, this figure far exceeded even the 24 million yen raised by the genuine leather version two years later, which also generated a huge response. I believe this shows just how many people saw the potential in the lightness of the “canvas” material and the functionality inherent in its **6mm** thickness.
However, behind that success, we faced many challenges: the difficulty of incorporating canvas into a compact wallet, maintaining production systems, and various issues related to ensuring consistent quality. It became difficult to consistently deliver the quality we were satisfied with, and for many years, we did not produce any additional units.
Several years have passed since then, and as the shift toward cashless payments continues, we have overcome the challenges of that time and are planning to resume production of the third-generation Tenuis—the canvas version of that slim, compact wallet. While it will be a limited edition at first, we are eager to bring it to market as soon as possible.
Specific improvements:
● Readjustment of the “amount of wax coating,” which affects texture and appearance. Too much makes wax marks noticeable, while too little eliminates the characteristic wax finish.
● As a natural material, canvas is inherently prone to shrinkage. It was previously difficult to apply both wax coating and anti-shrink treatment simultaneously,
but we have successfully overcome this challenge. ● Other structural updates.
Not only is it highly functional as a mini wallet, but it is also a one-of-a-kind compact wallet with a meticulously designed layout for coins and cards. It offers a “permanently” slim profile for travel and everyday use. This is a relaunch that redefines the concept of a bifold wallet.
